Thomas Sumter Academy is one of the few schools in the Southeast with an in-house dance program. Children in Pre-First Three – 12th Grades receive dance instruction in the areas of dance history, creative dance, tap, ballet, pointe, jazz, lyrical and modern. Group lessons are offered during the regular school day as a part of our Fine Arts curriculum. Students in 9th-12th Grades may elect to take dance for credit toward graduation. These classes meet on a daily basis and are for the most serious of our many talented students. Smaller performances are scheduled on and off campus throughout the year and a dance recital is presented by all dance students at year's end.
The curriculum for our Dance Program is based on the South Carolina Dance Education Standards. These areas include Technique, Choreography, Dance as Communication, Creative and Critical Thinking through Dance, History of Dance, Healthful Living, and Making Connections to other Disciplines and Dance. Two recitals are held each year.
For Pre-School students, the focus is on movement. We often correlate movement with what the children are learning in their class. For example, while children are learning about the season of Fall, we may mimic movements of leaves as they blow in the wind.
For Lower School students, dance becomes optional. The basic techniques are taught in ballet, tap, and jazz. Pre-First Five – 2nd Grades may sign up for ballet; 3rd Grade may sign up for tap; 4th and 5th Grades have the option of ballet, tap, or jazz. Jazz and tumbling is offered to boys in Pre-First Five-5th Grades.
Middle School students may sign up for ballet, tap, and jazz.
Upper School dance is for the most serious and talented students. The course is taken five days a week and is credited towards graduation requirements in Fine Arts.
